The god of Feeling?

Have you ever been to a conference, large gathering, "Youth" Rally's, Worship Concerts, ANY concert,  revivals, and even sometimes a church (think altar call), etc?
You just got this warm feeling, yet tingly, and exciting, you wanted to do something to make a difference. Then the speaker said something to the effect "Don't you just feel the spirit of god"? (notice I didn't capitalize "spirit" or "god"...it was purposeful). I have fealt the same way, whatever was talked about I decided then and there I would change that thing in my life (notice I said "I"), I would do all this for Christ.

I would come home pumped up ready to serve God. But then, reality would set it and I would realize I couldn't go to africa to be a missionary, I didn't have the funds to send to the mission fund and somehow I couldn't change that area in my life that I so badly knew needed a LOT of work. I was just here at home doing chores, fixing meals and writing blog posts and I just felt so low. That "high" feeling I had while surrounded by all these people looking for change and talking about change was all but gone (with the wind...literally).

First of all let me start out by saying if you serve the god of feeling then you really need to continue reading, but you may find the content offensive so continue at your own discretion.

The god of feeling is running rampant in our culture, it has been for a long time. When we look at the media they tell us everything that feels good is good, so do it. But the Bible tells us otherwise "Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel" Proverbs 20:17

The god of feeling makes us think that all things must be about how we feel. Pastors are no longer taught long and hard about the scripture and scriptural doctrine, instead it's oratory classes, classes to make whatever they have to say (whether it be scriptural or not) sound good and be motivational. I think a man if he is called to preach will not need classes on how to speak, if God has called him, then God will use him.

God used Moses, he had a speech impediment, did God say "I know this man in the desert he will show you how to get over this disability" or "Forget it Moses your to dumb to talk for Me."? No, he said " Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say" (Exodus 4:11-12). Moses was probably one of the most "motivational" speakers in history, but it wasn't Moses alone, God spoke through him.

Motivational speakers, youth rally's, etc will always make you feel good, that is their business. No longer do people preach the Word, instead they preach what they believe you want to hear and hope to "change" the world. The god of feeling makes you feel good, it makes you want to do the hard thing, but you never actually do it, it makes you think that you can change and that you will change, but you never actually will, because feelings don't always make you do things, especially the hard or impossible things. The god of feeling is in all of us, because we ourselves are creatures of emotions and feelings (especially us women).

God isn't a feeling... Stop looking for a god that makes you feel good, that agrees with your decisions, that makes you look good...those are easy to find, just look in the mirror. You are a sinful creature and that's all you will ever be. The only way that you can change is to give your life to Christ ask for forgiveness for all of your sins. You will never be good enough on your own, you must have Jesus in your heart to make you "Good".
God is the only good and perfect thing in this world, you must look to Him. You may go through a lot of scrutiny, pain, and one day even death for trusting in and claiming Him...but the life you lived will be a witness for Christ and your destiny is secure.
The only way to know God is not through, signs, wonders, miracles, or so called "good" feelings, it is through His Word.
(Scripture References: 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, Galatians 5:15-17, 1 John 2:15-17, Romans 3:23, John 3:16, James 1:17, John 1)

Now you can walk away from this post and think you will change, but if God is not the one prompting the change then you better think again. Give your life to Christ, give this god you cherish so much to Christ. Even if you are a Christian we can place the god of feeling as an idol in our life, ask God to remove it, because He is the only one who can. You can do nothing on your own.

So, will you continue to "believe in yourself" or "follow your heart" or will you believe in Christ and ask him to take control of your heart.

  1. I totally agree, That "Toughy feely" is great once in a while, and we need it to stay uplifted, but it shouldn't be the basis of our faith. God said that, "It rains on the just and the unjust" And we also need the bad times, to grow and strengthen our faith. Paul had a "Thorn in his side" All his life, but he still loved and served Christ just the same as he would have without it. Great post!

  2. Avonlea_dreamer - you're so right, this post was actually based off of my "Life" verse which 2 Cor. 12:9-10, which is the end of the chapter that talks about Pauls thorn in the flesh!
